Despite industry claims to the contrary, cell phone towers can actually contribute to the collapse of bee populations, according to the findings of a study conducted by researchers at the University of Punjab India and published in the journal Current Science.
"The increased use of electronic gadgets has led to electropollution environment. Bee behavior and biology has been affected by electro-smog, as these insects have magnetite in their bodies that help navigation, "the researchers write.
Honeybees play an important role in pollinating food crops of the world's largest. Populations have been declining in North America, Europe and other parts of the world to raise the alarm because of two ecological health and food security.
Many studies to identify the reasons for the decline, and most researchers are now blaming a combination of pesticides, disease and habitat loss. In the new study, researchers tried to determine whether radiation from mobile phones may play a role in connecting the two mobile phones for a beehive, and by joining two dummy phones for a hive inspection. The phones were then active in the past two sessions of 15 minutes each day for three months.
"There are reports concerning the sudden disappearance of bee populations from colonies," they write. "The cause is not yet clear. We have compared the results of the bees in the cell phone radiation exposed and unexposed colonies."
At the end of the study period, the number of eggs laid by the queen had declined significantly in the hive with a cell phone, and honey production had ceased. The whole bee population has also declined, as did the number of workers returning from foraging trips. The absence of workers in turn leads to an overall decrease in the production of nectar.
"The behavior exhibited forums owners was negatively affected by exposure, there was no honey or pollen in the colony at the end of the study," the researchers wrote.
